The 5 Foundational Pillars For Building and Operating a Winning Broadband Network

Your goal as a broadband service provider (BSP) is to deliver the ultimate subscriber experience. Get this right and you will reduce churn, increase loyalty, and drive revenue growth. Sound easy? It isn’t when you consider the competitive pressures many BSPs face. Teams must become increasingly agile and costs must be kept under control. Meanwhile, network operations and engineers must develop the ability to proactively identify and address network concerns—ideally before they become a major problem.

The solution lies in a flexible, future-proof secure network that adheres to standardized protocols and possesses a common operational model that drastically simplifies operations, reduces total cost of operations (TCO) and significantly accelerates time to market, time to revenue capabilities.

But how do you get there? We see five foundational elements underpinning that success: scalability, sustainability, security, and serviceability—all of which share a common software platform that drives value and differentiation culminating in new revenue streams, greater subscriber satisfaction, and higher Net Promotor ScoresSM (NPS ®). By focusing on these five foundational elements BSPs can:

  • Design a scalable, future-proof network. A network must be easily scalable to support new subscribers and applications without impacting service delivery. For example, Calix is helping BSPs deploy end-to-end IPv6-capable networks to meet rapidly rising demand for new IPv6 devices. We’re also helping plan for PON redundancy to ensure service continuity and an Always-On network. This includes the ability to perform seamless network software upgrades with zero subscriber downtime. By reducing the time it takes to add network capacity, Calix is helping BSPs perform subscriber turnup speeds up to 70 percent faster than before.

  • Build a sustainable network that lasts for decades. By reducing the number of pieces of equipment needed to operate broadband network, you can reduce OPEX—and your impact on the environment. For example, Calix XGS-PON cards have twice the number of ports in the same amount of space with half the power per port compared to previous cards. Moreover, by using the monitoring, automation, and remote diagnostics tools on the Calix platforms you can drastically reduce OPEX and costly truck rolls.

  • Deploy an effective security framework that protects your subscribers. Modern networks require security features end-to-end—from the central office to the subscriber facing network and all the way into your subscribers’ homes. By providing a simplified network architecture, the Calix solution reduces the number of systems you need to manage and secure. It also provides you with a range of robust security features and tools. On the Calix Intelligent Access EDGE platform, for example, we recently introduced an advanced routing module (ARm) enhancement, which guards against unauthorized network traffic flowing between interfaces in the subscriber-facing network.

  • Increase the serviceability of your network. Serviceability is the ability to execute service provisioning at speed, dynamically address network issues, and maintain network health at both the hardware and software levels. Getting network serviceability right by streamlining the network deployment and subscriber turnup processes leads to faster service provisioning, lower costs, and most importantly, very satisfied subscribers. Service providers that utilize the dynamic troubleshooting and issue resolution capabilities on the Calix platform are reducing truck rolls by 40 percent.

  • There’s a fifth “S” that powers all of these elements: software. At Calix, this software engine is delivered via Calix Intelligent Access EDGE™, Calix Revenue EDGE™, and Calix Cloud®. These are powerful platforms for innovation and growth that are enabling BSPs to transform their businesses and deliver amazing subscriber experiences.
